TERMINATE THE TURBINES

The Coastal Bend, on the frontlines of the methane gas export boom, is home to Cheniere’s massive Corpus Christi Liquefaction facility, located in Gregory. Operating on over 1,000 acres within 5 miles of 5 different schools and tens of thousands of residents, Cheniere has proven over and over to be the worst imaginable neighbor, violating its state air pollution limits 293 times since launching in 2018.

But when the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has acted, it has sided with Cheniere by increasing their pollutant limit; today, the limits are double what they were when Corpus Christi Liquefaction opened.

In addition to the air pollution from accidental leaks and intentional flaring, the combustion gas turbines used during the liquefaction process also emit cancer-causing chemicals, including formaldehyde and benzene. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) first deemed these gas turbines unsafe twenty years ago. But while the risk was known to Cheniere for more than a decade before the company began construction of Corpus Christi Liquefaction, they chose to use the dangerous technology anyway.

In 2023, the EPA began mandating the retirement of gas-powered turbines. Cheniere asked for an exemption from the EPA rule but the EPA refused. Unfortunately, a test from a Cheniere-controlled air monitor demonstrated “acceptable” levels of toxic pollution – meaning Corpus Christi Liquefaction has a free pass to continue operating the cancer-causing turbines. Every day Cheniere keeps the turbines in operation, area families and children are breathing in concentrated amounts of toxic air pollution.

That’s why TCE is partnering with community leaders to demand that Cheniere CEO Jack Fusco commit to replacing the turbines at the Corpus Christi Liquefaction facility in Gregory immediately. Cheniere makes billions each year, in addition to receiving over a billion dollars in tax breaks from Texas taxpayers – they can afford to replace the turbines, and they owe it to their community to operate responsibly. Cheniere is already replacing turbines at their Sabine Pass facility just up the coast! Why not here? With enough people power, we can force Cheniere to take action to protect clean air in the Coastal Bend.
