avina ammonia

With one of the largest ports in North America, Corpus Christi has seen an increase in proposed ammonia facilities in the area. Avina is planning to build a world-scale green ammonia facility for exports that will be located on FM 1889/ CR 46.

The proposed facility will use 7 million gallons of water per day with an option to ask for an increase of water usage per a 72-hour request while the city is currently in drought 2 restrictions, and looking towards heading into drought 3 by the end of the summer.

Green Ammonia is anything but green, and still has the potential to cause environmental harm. Ammonia is highly toxic, even in very low amounts. A constant source of noxious odors, ammonia is also nitrogen heavy and would generate large amounts of air pollution such as nitrogen oxide that can lead to many health problems, ranging from asthma to heart disease. Excess nitrogen from the ammonia could not only impact aquatic life, but humans as well.

One of the primary byproducts of the plant would be carbon dioxide. 95% of the carbon dioxide is planned to be moved through a pipeline to be stored underground. Carbon dioxide pipelines are highly corrosive and will expose our community to serious hazards and pollution events. Carbon dioxide is colorless and odorless, could pollute groundwater and soil, and is dangerous to breathe in the event of a leak.

TCE is working alongside frontline communities and coalition partners who oppose this monstrosity. We’re focused on educating the community on the potential dangers of an ammonia facility in the area in effort to apply pressure to Robstown ISD to not grant Avina a 403 tax abatement. Tax abatements to facilities that pollute and harm communities are morally bankrupt, and we will continue to advocate and educate to prevent Avina from gaining their 403 tax abatement.
